Next tie 13-15 September 2013
Chile will bid to avoid dropping into Americas Zone Group II for the first time since 1991 when it takes on Dominican Republic in the Group I second round relegation play-off. Chile won the only previous meeting between the two teams 5-0 in 1991.
Last tie 5-7 April 2013
Chile missed its chance to reach the World Group play-offs for a third consecutive year after losing 3-2 to Ecuador on away soil. Paul Capdeville put the visitors 2-1 ahead alongside Jorge Aguilar in the doubles after earlier winning his singles rubber, but the Chilean No. 1 had to retire while trailing Julio-Cesar Campozana 4-1 in the fourth set as Emilio Gomez rounded out a fine turnaround victory for the hosts by defeating Christian Garin in four sets.
History
Chile's best performance came in 1976, when it finished runner-up to Italy in Santiago. Patricio Cornejo and Jaime Fillol played the longest Davis Cup set and rubber - in terms of games - when losing to Americans Stan Smith and Erik Van Dillen 97 3937 68 16 36 in the 1973 American Zone Final.
