The Czechs host Netherlands in the first round of the 2014 competition. Netherlands secured a comfortable victory over Austria in the 2013 World Group play-offs, but face a daunting task against the two-time defending champions, who are unbeaten in Davis Cup ties since 2011.

Czech Republic defeated Serbia 3-2 in Belgrade to claim their second consecutive Davis Cup title. With the scores tied at 1-1 after the first day of play, Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek combined to win a vital point for their side in the doubles. Novak Djokovic defeated Berdych in the fourth rubber, but, for the second year in a row, Stepanek won the decisive rubber to ensure that the Czechs would retain the trophy.
Following their 2013 victory over Serbia, Czech Republic have now won the Davis Cup on three occasions. The first victory came in 1980, when they played as Czechoslovakia, with the second coming in 2012. They have also finished runners-up on two further occasions, in 1975 and 2009. Along with USA, they have appeared in the World Group in all but one year. Czech players represented Czechoslovakia until 1992, and then Czech/Slovak Republics in 1993.
