Spain slumped to a 3-2 defeat to Canada in the first round, their first World Group first round defeat since 2006. Milos Raonic won 2 singles rubbers for Canada while Frank Dancevic arguably made the difference for the hosts, securing a surprise win over Marcel Granollers in the second rubber to give Raonic the chance to seal victory. Spains rubbers came from established team Granollers and Marc Lopez in the doubles and from Albert Ramos in the dead fifth rubber.
