Japan will once again play host as they compete in their first ever World Group quarterfinal when they face Czech Republic. They have played each other twice before but have not met in the competition since 1935.

Japan defeated Canada 4-1 in Tokyo thanks to Kei Nishikori who played a part in all three of the key rubbers defeated Peter Polansky on the opening day before pairing with Yasutaka Uchiayama for the doubles to set up the victory when Frank Dancevic retired to the Japanese No. 1 in the first reverse singles when trailing by a set.
Japan finished runner-up in 1921, which was its best Davis Cup performance to date. Japan was an inaugural member of the World Group in 1981. In 2011 they returned to the top tier of the competition after 26 years in the Asia/Oceania Group I before scoring their first victory at the highest level in 2014.
