Netherlands reached the World Group play-offs with a 5-0 victory over Romania, having defeated them at the same stage last year. When Igor Sijsling defeated Romania's top player, Victor Hanescu, in five sets on the opening day to give Netherlands a 2-0 lead, the tie was essentially over. A routine victory from Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer saw Netherlands safely through to the play-offs.
Netherlands enjoyed its best Davis Cup run in 2001, when it reached the semifinals. Dutchman Michiel Schapers was involved in the joint-longest set of a Davis Cup singles rubber - 46 games - in 1987.
