Thailand face Hong Kong in the first round of the 2014 competition. With a 4-1 head-to-head record in its favour, Thailand will start as favourites against Hong Kong, who return to this level following promotion from Group III in 2013.

Thailand suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Philippines. Thailand got off to a poor start when Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul was forced to retire in the third set of his opening rubber against Ruben Gonzales. Danai Udomchoke levelled the tie at 1-1 after the first day. Philippines then won the doubles to move 2-1 up before Ruben Gonzales sealed victory for Philippines.
Thailand has reached the World Group play-offs on four occasions, in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006, but is yet to play in the competition’s top tier.
